Ariel Waisman

Ariel Waisman, PhD

Principal Investigator · Investigador Adjunto, CONICET

Ariel trained as a biologist at the University of Buenos Aires. During his PhD in Alejandra Guberman’s lab, he studied how the cell cycle influences the transition of mouse embryonic stem cells out of pluripotency. A Fulbright fellowship during his doctorate took him to Ali Brivanlou’s lab at The Rockefeller University in New York for a six-month research stay. In 2019, he attended the Embryology Course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Both experiences were formative in his development as a scientist, deepening his interest in developmental biology and strongly shaping the questions and approaches that would later guide his research. As a postdoc with Santiago Miriuka at FLENI, he moved into human pluripotent stem cells and cardiac differentiation. During this period, he also began developing computational tools for image analysis, including deep-learning approaches to predict stem cell differentiation.

In 2022, Ariel started his own group at FLENI (LIAN, INEU–CONICET). The lab brings together his long-standing interest in cell-cycle regulation with the study of human cardiomyocyte maturation and cardiac regeneration. A central goal is to use human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes to model the regenerative capacity of the early postnatal heart, understand why this capacity is lost with maturation, and explore how proliferative potential might ultimately be restored in adult cardiomyocytes. Teaching and mentoring have been a constant throughout his career. He taught undergraduate courses at FCEN-UBA for six years and has supervised doctoral and undergraduate theses since founding the lab, including the lab’s first completed PhDs in 2026. He also serves on the editorial board of Scientific Reports.
